Greek Pregnant Worker Case

29 May 2009
A Greek company has been fined for firing an employee after it found out she was pregnant. The worker, who was employed in the sales department of a private company, filed a complaint to the Greek Ombudsman that her employer laid her off shortly after she announced her pregnancy. The employer claimed that the worker’s behaviour had been problematic and her release was not linked to the pregnancy. Nonetheless, the Ombudsman has found that the worker did not receive any notice from her boss in regards to her behaviour and that the employer started putting pressure on her to resign. According to the ruling, this behaviour constitutes a significant violation of human rights and a case of gender discrimination.
