Greek Water Classified as Toxic

A recent University of Athens study has indicated that the fresh water supply in certain districts of the island of Euboea in Greece is contaminated with dangerous amounts of the carcinogenic substance hexavalent chromium (Cr VI). Hexavalent chromium – often publicly associated with the campaign work of Erin Brockovich - can cause skin rashes, stomach ulcers, kidney failure and cancer. Nikolaos Chountis MEP has tabled a question to DG Environment on the issue and experts are currently working to identify the source of the contamination.
