"Greener" Light Source Developed

18 May 2009
New Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) that are as efficient as conventional fluorescent tubes have been developed by scientists from the Technical University of Dresden in Germany. The scientists claim that the lights can reach efficiency levels of 90 lumens per watt (lm/W), surpassing the 44 lm/W efficiency levels of previous OLEDs. Conventional fluorescent tubes have efficiency levels of between 60 lm/W to 70 lm/W. The diodes, which are semiconductors made of layers of microscopic material, could be the light source of the future as they are highly energy-efficient and could therefore help reduce carbon emissions. The team behind the new lights believe that with further research, cost-effective OLEDs capable of over 100 lm/W could be on the market soon.
