H1N1 Virus in European Pigs

The Northern Irish Department for Agriculture and Rural Development has confirmed that a local herd of pigs has tested positive for the Novel H1N1 influenza virus – more commonly known as ‘swine flu’. This is the first case reported in pigs in Europe. The UK Food Standards Agency has reassured worried consumers that the H1N1 virus does not pose a food safety risk.
