Hospital Waste Scandal in Greece

A report into waste disposal in Athens has revealed that dangerous medical waste, such as catheters, syringes, colostomy bags and bloodied articles are regularly deposited by hospitals at regular landfill sites as opposed to being incinerated as required by environmental health regulations. This practice poses a severe risk to public health. The study, which was produced by the Association of Municipalities and Communities of Attica, discovered that all 16 inspections of garbage trucks leaving hospitals revealed the presence of toxic materials.
