Hungary: Cyanide Mining

Hungary wants to see the rest of Europe follow its lead in banning cyanide-based mining technologies. Ten years ago, contamination from a cyanide spill on the river Tisza from Baia Mare, Romania, devastated the river's wildlife. This issue is likely to be a priority of Hungary when it takes on the EU presidency in the first half of 2011.
