Ink Substance Found in Muesli

24 February 2009
An EU-wide investigation has been launched after a consumer found a toxic chemical, 4-methylbenzophenone, in his bowl of chocolate crunch muesli. The chemical, normally used in ink, had migrated from outside the cardboard package into the food. The Belgian manufacturer of the muesli said that the package was produced in the Netherlands and was largely distributed in the EU. Eight Member States in total are directly concerned by this problem. The European Food Safety Authority will issue an emergency risk evaluation report in March.
