Italian Asbestos Trial Begins

The trial into the deaths of more than 2200 people because of allegedly unhealthy work conditions at an asbestos cement factory in Italy is underway in Turin. Executives of the multinational Eternit are accused of creating dangerous conditions for workers where, for decades, little or no protection was given. Workers claim that the asbestos entered the factory in bags, which were slit open by hand and the contents then poured into a mill. This enabled asbestos fibres to disperse in the factory.
