Italy Tackles Wind Farm Corruption

06 May 2009
Italian prosecutors have launched a crackdown on the involvement of organised crime in wind farm construction. Illegal activity is mostly centred on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. Prosecutors allege that some wind farms, which have never produced electricity, still receive public sector subsidies. So far 8 people, including local officials, businessmen and an alleged Mafia boss, have been arrested on charges of corruption. Sicily’s regional government is currently promoting micro-projects so that households and companies can generate their own wind and solar power. It is hoped that this strategy will help minimize the involvement of organized crime.
