MRSA in Food not a Risk for Humans?

06 April 2009
There is no evidence that food contaminated by MRSA can lead to human infection, a scientific opinion by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded. The opinion analysed the public health significance of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), and stated that humans are unlikely to become carriers of the bacterium by eating or handling contaminated food. Nonetheless, as MRSA is mostly detected in pigs, veal calves and broiler chickens, people in contact with animals such as farmers and vets face a greater risk than the general population. Measures to control the bacterium should therefore be implemented at farm level, says EFSA.
