Mad Cow Case in Czech Republic

01 April 2009
A new case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or ‘mad cow disease’, has been discovered in the Czech Republic. The country’s Veterinary Office said that while the case presented no health threat to the general public, a cull of around 200 related cattle would now be undertaken as a precaution. The discovery of the infected cow is the first reported case of BSE in the Czech Republic since 2007. The country is listed by the World Organisation for Animal Health as a controlled BSE risk country alongside neighbouring countries like Germany, Poland and Slovakia.
