Madeira Mudslide Fears

Thousands have left their homes in the tourist island of Madeira, frightened that mudslides and flooding, which have already killed at least 42 people, could strike again. Portugal has called for three days of mourning for those killed at the weekend. Environmental campaigners claim that poor, unregulated development has left Madeira vulnerable to the type of flash floods it has recently experienced. The island has undergone a construction boom in the past 30 years.
