Mediterranean Weak in Ergonomics

20 April 2009
Mediterranean Member States account for the highest share of workers exposed to constant ergonomic risks, says a comparative study of working conditions in the EU. Ergonomic risks taken into account in the study included tiring and painful positions, moving heavy loads, repetitive tasks and vibrations from equipment. The report says that ergonomic risks have significant consequences in terms of the quality of work and the health and safety of workers. Greece is the worst for exposing workers to such risks, while Cyprus follows second. High incidences were also reported in Spain, Italy and Portugal. The study found that Northern European countries were better at limiting workers’ exposure to ergonomic risk.
