Melting Snow Caps in Europe

27 November 2009
Melting snow caps will result in the closure of many winter sports resorts in the coming decades, says a recent United Nations World Tourism Organisation report. As a result some resorts have taken action. Val Thorens in France for example now has lifts that are powered by renew-able hydroelectric energy; and has planted more than 200,000 trees in the past 20 years. Les Arcs, also in France, has banned cars from resort areas and limited off-piste skiing to protect endangered species. Furthermore, many new developments adhere to the principles of Haute Qualité Environmental (HQE); the international construction industry standard defined at the 1992 Earth Summit.
