Minefield Clearer Killed

A UN worker on the island of Cyprus was killed on Wednesday while clearing a minefield 10 kilometres to the southeast of Nicosia. The individual, who has been identified as a Mozambique national, was a member of the Mine Action Centre Cyprus (MACC), which is tasked with ridding Cyprus’s buffer zone of mines by April 2011. This was the group’s first fatality in five years of work on the island.
