Beef may be tasty, but producing it is ‘harmful for the environment’, says Nathan Pelletier of Dalhousie University in Canada. His team of scientists have claimed that for every kilogramme of beef, 16 kilogrammes of carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere. This is, respectively, four times higher than one kilogramme of pork and ten times more than one kilogramme of poultry. The “fast food” sector has proved to be recession resistant so far in Europe, but it may now have to pass the ‘environmental’ test as well.
