Nanotech Sector Pools its Resources

12 March 2009
Europe’s leading nanotechnology research centres are pooling their resources in order to better compete in what promises to be a highly lucrative sector. The newly-formed Heterogeneous Technology Alliance (HTA) between the Electronics and Information Technology Lab of the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA-Leti), the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany, the Finnish Innovation Agency VTT and the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) brings together more than 5,000 scientists and 4,600 patents. Nanotechnology research is currently being applied in fields such as materials, chemistry, food, energy and biotech. There are still safety concerns regarding the application of nanotechnology, especially in food, but European nanotech researchers believe that the new alliance is essential if Europe is to compete internationally in what is a fast growing area of research.
