Netherlands Bans Eel Fishing

01 October 2009
From today the fishing of eels will be prohibited in the Netherlands until 1 December. This decision has been taken in order to protect stocks of eels as stocks of the highly prized fish have plummeted 95% in the past 50 years. The Dutch government plans to ban eel fishing for three months each year until 2012, when the decision will be reviewed. It has made €700,000 available to compensate the 240 fishing businesses which will be affected by this measure.
