New Guidance on Working at Heights

23 April 2009
New guidelines on how to choose the most appropriate work equipment for performing work at height, has been published by the European Commission. The guide covers special training on how to use ladders, choosing equipment with appropriate dimensions and the need to take into account weather conditions. The guide is targeted specifically at helping SMEs improve conditions at workplaces, while reducing production costs. Falling from height is one of the principle causes of fatal work accidents, with up to 1,300 deaths per year in the EU. Unsurprisingly, those working in the construction sector are particularly at risk.
