New Plastics Recycling Method

25 May 2009
Researchers have developed a new method for separating different types of waste plastic. The process, called the 'flotation' method, recovers PVC and PET, which are among the plastics most difficult to separate from each other. The researchers believe that this new method could recover around 98% of PVC thrown away as waste. In Europe, around 20% of plastics are currently recycled. Other options used to deal with waste PVC include burning and landfilling, but these are not very environmentally friendly. Burning plastic releases toxic gases that can be hazardous to human health and the environment, while landfilling can release hazardous chemicals into the ground.
