New Threat to Honeybee

20 August 2009
Europe’s declining population of honeybees is under further threat from expanding colonies of bee-eating hornets in France. The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), which can wipe out an entire beehive in 48 hours, was first observed in France in 2004 and is believed to have entered the country on a boat carrying ceramic goods from China. It is now firmly established in the Bordeaux region and has advanced as far north as Brittany. Beekeepers fear that it is only a matter of time before the hornet spreads further across Europe.
