Night Shifts and Breast Cancer

The Danish government has started paying compensation to female workers who developed breast cancer after working night shifts. The initiative follows findings by a UN agency and a scientific opinion from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) confirming that night shifts can increase the risk of cancer development. Scientists believe that overnight work disrupts the body’s circadian rhythm and the production of melatonin, the hormone which suppresses tumour development. Overnight work is common in the healthcare and hospitality sector, industrial manufacturing, transportation and security.
