Norway Cuts Sea Discharges

12 June 2009
Discharges of environmentally harmful chemicals into the sea and emissions of volatile hydrocarbons decreased in Norway in 2008, but CO2 emissions hit higher levels, says the Norwegian Pollution Control Agency. The rise in CO2 emissions has been partly attributed to a new calculation system that uses a higher calculation factor for CO2 emissions from flaring offshore. Other than that, CO2 emissions have remained stable since 2002, says the agency. As regards discharges, Norway has a goal of achieving zero discharges of oil and environmentally hazardous substances. A reduction of 228 tonnes of discharge of black chemicals to barely 2 tonnes has been achieved since 1997. A strategy of replacing chemicals with less harmful substances is being pursued.
