Nuclear Plant Safety

24 March 2009
Nuclear power is gaining in popularity following the recent spike in oil and gas prices, but fears over health and safety remain. An article in The Economist identifies the safety implications of increased competition between nuclear energy firms as a central issue. After the nuclear accident in Chernobyl, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) demanded deeper cooperation on safety at a global level, but IAEA safety rules are for the moment voluntary. The article warns that making them compulsory might be hard to achieve. Pierre Gadonneix, the CEO of EDF, the biggest operator of nuclear plants, is nonetheless optimistic that complete transparency regarding safety can be achieved.
