Nuclear Plant to Continue Operations

Spain oldest nuclear power station will continue producing electricity for four years before it is closed in 2013 despite health and safety concerns expressed by environmental groups. The country's nuclear regulatory agency recommended that the Garona nuclear power plant in northern Spain, which was originally designed to operate until 2001, could continue operating after undergoing a safety upgrade. Environmental campaigners however claim that the plant is outdated and suffering from corrosion. Local residents, many of whom work at the station, recently campaigned to keep the plant operational.
