Organic Apples More Nutritious?

27 April 2009
Apples that have been organically produced may be more nutritious than conventionally grown apples, a new German study suggests. Researchers from the Federal Research Institute of Nutrition and Food in Karlsruhe compared Golden Delicious apples grown under organic and conventional conditions over a period of 3 years. According to their findings, organically produced apples displayed a higher phytochemical concentration (10%) and a higher antioxidant capacity (15%). Relevant studies in the past have supported or opposed these findings, adding to the on-going debate on whether organic products are more nutritious than conventional ones. However, the British Nutrition Foundation claims that there is not enough evidence to recommend organic products over conventionally produced foods.
