Pesticides and Parkinson’s Disease

24 June 2009
Professional exposure to pesticides could be linked to the development of Parkinson’s disease, claims a new epidemiological study. The study, conducted by the National French Institute for Health Research in Paris and the University Pierre et Marie Curie, looked at French farm workers who were frequently exposed to pesticides in the course of their work. Researchers gathered and compared data on farm size, type of crops, animal breeding, type of pesticides, period of use, frequency and duration of exposure per year. Results suggested that Parkinson’s disease patients had been exposed to pesticides through their work more often and for a greater time period than those without Parkinson’s disease.
