Portugal: Cork Forests Threatened

09 July 2009
The wine industry’s rapid shift towards replacing corks could threaten Portugal’s cork forests, were 55% of the world’s corks are sourced. Some environmentalists warn that forests could become commercially obsolete within a decade, putting them at risk of neglect and disease. The forests are home to the Iberian lynx and the Barbary deer, and also protect against desertification, especially in southern Portugal. The problem however is that synthetic stoppers are cheaper, and also preclude all risk of cork taint. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have launched a campaign to address this and improve cork quality.
