Portugal to Build New Waste Plants

08 June 2009
Portugal plans to build new incinerators in order to increase its waste-to-energy capacity. The Portuguese government’s aim is to reduce the amount of landfill waste and increase the use of energy incinerators that burn waste to produce energy. It predicts that 1.2 million tonnes of waste will be used for energy production by 2013, generating 421 megawatts per year. The strategy has however been criticised for conflicting with current waste laws. Critics also claim that the government’s figures have been exaggerated in order to justify the construction of new incinerators.
