Portuguese Dam Project Criticised

12 November 2009
A report on Portugal’s national dams programme has concluded that the ten dams the Portuguese government is planning would breach the EU’s Water Framework Directive. The study, which was sponsored by the European Commission, stated that a number of failures in the way environmental impact assessments on some of the dams were carried out meant that Portugal was likely to face sanctions. The report is not public and NGOs are currently taking legal advice with the aim of forcing the Commission to release the study.
