Processed Foods Linked to High Salt

12 May 2009
Daily salt intake in Denmark exceeds recommended levels, with processed foods pinpointed as the main cause, claims a study from the Technical University of Denmark. The survey found that only 10% of total salt intake comes from household salt. Excessive salt intake is consequently the result of salt added during the processing or manufacture of foods. The conclusion of the study is that excessive salt levels cannot therefore simply be addressed by reducing the use of household salt, but by addressing the salt content of processed food. Danish men have an average daily salt intake of 10.3g, while women have an average of 7.1g; well above the daily recommended intake of 5g.
