Quake Risk Stops Geothermal Plant

A project to build an environmentally friendly geothermal power plant that would have provided enough power for 10,000 homes has been abandoned. Scientists were concerned that the plant, near the town of Basel in Switzerland, could be seriously damaged in the event of an earthquake. A risk assessment suggested that the prospect of further earthquakes was too high for drilling in the city to continue. The scheme aimed to generate commercial power by boiling water beneath the Earth's surface.
