Re-Usable Food Bags a Health Risk

25 May 2009
A high level of bacteria can be found in reusable bags and packages, warns a new study funded by Environment and Plastic Industry Council (EPIC). The test results suggest that grocery bags, which are often re-used, contain “substantial bacterial populations”. The highest risk for food safety is cross-contamination of food placed in bags contaminated by previous use. Although further study is needed, the results confirm that meat should always be double packed in a first-use bag before storage. Researchers want this requirement to become compulsory for the entire grocery industry for reusable bags.
