Recession Causes Lower Diet Quality

The economic crisis could be a barrier to healthy eating, suggests a survey of 12,000 people in the UK. Consumers claim that price has become the number one factor when choosing food products, leading to the consumption of unhealthy foods which tend to be cheaper than vegetables and fruit. Consumer organisations are calling for further reduction in salt, fat and sugar in foods, as well as price promotions for healthier options. Traditional ‘fast food’ outlets have reported strong sales since the economic downturn began.
