Restructuring and Worker Health

30 June 2009
Company restructuring affects workers being let off and those staying on in a reduced capacity, says a Danish study entitled Health in Restructuring – Innovative Approaches and Policy Recommendations. The study found that those affected by restructuring were subject to an increased risk of illness. The study suggests that increasing workload and changes in the working environment can increase stress and insecurity and decrease productivity and innovation. Effective and transparent communication, in particular concerning the reasons of the restructuring and its impacts, is crucial to restore confidence. Support for workers and those no longer working in the company should be implemented through training, psychological support and counselling.
