Safety Concerns over Smoked Flavours

07 April 2009
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has expressed safety concerns over the use of two smoked flavourings. It claims there is “insufficient margins of safety” between estimated exposure to the two flavouring products and intake levels above which they may cause adverse health effects. The authority emphasised however that there is no need for concern over genotoxicity, or damage to the genetic material of cells. EFSA is due to publish opinions on eight further smoked flavourings by the end of 2009.
