Finnish Nuclear Plant Safety

01 July 2009
Finland’s strict safety regulations have been attributed for the delay in the construction of a major third generation nuclear reactor. The safety practices provisionally put in place by the French contractor have struggled to gain approval from Finnish authorities. The construction of the reactor has also received criticism from campaigners who claim that the reactor has not been sufficiently tested. There are also concerns that the proposed plant will be built too close to the Baltic Sea. The plant was originally expected to be operational this summer, at an estimated cost of €4.2 billion.
