Sahara Solar Power for Europe

Plans to provide Europe with energy by building solar panels in the Sahara have divided environmental experts. While some believe the plan is visionary, others say that developing renewable sources within Europe should be the priority. They would like to see a range of diversified projects such as offshore wind turbines and hydro-electric power from Scandinavia being encouraged. In Germany, deputy environment minister Matthias Machnig said the project in Africa had "enormous potential”, but the Social Democratic deputy Hermann Scheer said that decentralised European sources should be prioritised ahead of such a massive project.
