Scotland: Too Much Salt in Food

18 May 2009
A significant number of takeaway dishes from restaurants across Edinburgh in Scotland exceed the recommended daily salt allowance of 6 grams, claims a city council study. A typical Chinese takeaway dish can contain as much as 9 grams, while 87% of Chinese-style dishes and 60% of Indian dishes examined contained more than 3g, or half the recommended daily amount. The researchers point out that in addition to already containing high levels of salt, consumers often add more salt to prepared food. City council investigators are now contacting restaurants to advice chefs on how to reduce salt. Eating too much salt has been linked to raised blood pressure, which can lead to strokes, heart disease, kidney failure and eye damage.
