Slovakian Mining Disaster Remembered

Mourners in Slovakia have gathered to remember the 20 mine workers who lost their lives on 10 August in an underground explosion last week. This was the worst mining disaster in Slovakia’s history since independence. The explosion, which was caused by flammable gases, most probably methane, occurred after mine rescuers had been deployed to extinguish a fire in an abandoned mining tunnel.
