SmartCity Green Initiative Launched

A project entitled the SmartCity initiative has been launched in Malaga, Spain, with the aim of improving energy efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions and making more use of renewable energies. The €31 million project includes the installation of photovoltaic panels on public buildings and the establishment of micro wind power systems in the area. Energy will also be stored in batteries, so that it can be used later in lighting public areas and providing energy for electric transport. Spanish local authorities want to encourage the use of electric cars in the city, and plan to introduce recharging stations and a small fleet of vehicles. Similar SmartCity programmes already operate in Stockholm and Malta.
