Spanish Vulture Population Plummeting

18 August 2009
Spanish conservationists have blamed new regulations requiring farmers to promptly remove animal carcasses for a dramatic fall in the number of griffon vultures living in the Hoces del Río Riaza National Park. The park, which is home to one of Europe’s largest colonies of griffon vultures, has seen its vulture population fall from 1,117 birds to 753 - a decline of approximately 33% - since the region of Castilla y León applied the new rules. Conservationists are currently arguing for a change in the law that would allow carcasses to be left in designated areas for vultures.
