Subsidised to KEEP Your Handset?

30 March 2009
In an initiative unlikely to enthuse handset manufacturers, France Telecom-Orange is encouraging customers to be more environmentally friendly by offering them €40 if they choose to keep their old mobile phone when renewing their subscription. The telecommunications firm also pledges to make a donation of €5 to environmental group WWF every time a consumer declines an upgrade to a newer phone. The company believes the initiative could make a difference as consumers currently change their mobile phone on average every year and a half. This is a drastic departure from the common practice of subsidising handsets that are sold together with contracts. Orange also plans to invest more in environmentally friendly business practices such as teleconferences and e-services, which reduce the need for travel and cuts paper consumption.
