Suspect Colourings in Confectionery

23 March 2009
Confectionery firms have been criticised by food campaigners in the UK who claim that they have not fulfilled their pledge to remove certain artificial colours from their products. UK pressure group The Food Commission says that the lack of action is “highly irresponsible”. Artificial colours Tartrazine (E102), Quinoline Yellow (E104), Sunset Yellow (E110), Carmoisine (E122), Ponceau 4R (E124) and Allura Red (E129), were linked to hyperactivity in children in the so-called ‘Southampton study’. According to The Food Commission, many confectionery products on the market still contain these additives, despite industry promises to the contrary. In November 2008, UK ministers voted to introduce a voluntary ban on the six colours, with a view to phasing them out by the end of 2009.
