Sweden to Ban Detergent Phosphates

Sweden wants to ban dishwasher detergents that contain more than 0.5% phosphates by July 2009. The aim is to replace phosphates in cleaning agents by more environmentally-friendly solutions, and to curb phosphate emissions by 20 tonnes a year. Phosphates cause excessive plant growth and a reduction in oxygen in lakes, leading to severe reductions in water quality, fish and animal populations.
