Sweet Drinks; Heart Disease in Women

30 March 2009
Drinking 2 or more sugar-sweetened beverages per day increases the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke or diabetes by 35% in women, says a new study conducted by a team of researchers from Boston and Harvard. Artificially sweetened drinks were however not associated with heart disease risk. The study was conducted between 1980 and 2002 evaluating women’s dietary habits. Other factors, such as body mass index, energy intake or unhealthy lifestyle did not alter the results, according to the scientists. There is growing pressure in Europe to more strictly regulate the marketing and advertising of sugary food and beverages, especially those targeted at children.
