Trapped Miners Rescued in Ukraine

14 April 2009
Two miners trapped over the Easter weekend in a coalmine in Donetsk, Ukraine, were rescued Monday morning. The miners had been trapped for 2 days after a roof cave-in at the Poltavska coalmine. Despite the collapse occurring at a depth of 477 metres, the miners almost managed to reach the surface by themselves, according to Ukraine’s State Committee for Industrial Safety, Labour Protection and Mining Supervision. Donetsk, a city in the north east of Ukraine, is at the centre of the country’s extensive coal industry, where safety has often been the focus of attention: work was suspended at 20 mines last year after an explosion killed 11 people.
