Treatment for Peanut Allergy Tested

17 March 2009
An experimental treatment to fight peanut allergies has had positive effects on children in the US. Peanut allergy is considered one of the most dangerous food allergies, and accounts for around 50 deaths in Europe each year. The new treatment, which has been introduced by Arkansas Children’s Hospital, involves retraining 29 children to tolerate peanuts by feeding them tiny amounts of specially prepared peanut flour until they experience a reaction. Children then continued to take a daily dose just under the reactive amount for a year and, as a result, their bodies got used to the allergen.
