UK Advisor Calls for Return of Beavers

18 March 2009
The dam-building habit of beavers can have a positive effect on the restoration and conservation of rivers, reports Natural England. The body, which advises the UK government on the natural environment, wants to see beavers reintroduced to England in order to better preserve the country’s waterways. There are already plans to reintroduce several beavers in Scotland after a 10-year long dispute between conservationists and landowners. Beavers were hunted to extinction in the UK for their fur. Conservationists fear that the reintroduction of beavers in England is unlikely to happen soon due to the concerns of landowners and farmers over crop damage.
