UK Building Sites Not Safe

14 May 2009
A fifth of building sites in the UK fail to meet appropriate safety standards, according to latest inspections carried out by the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Work had to be stopped on 348 sites last year in order for improvements to be made for the health and safety of workers. Inspection criteria used by HSE includes correctly installed and maintained equipment, working areas and stairs clear from obstruction and waste, correct prevention from exposure to asbestos and appropriate precautions for jobs that involved working at height. HSE chief inspector Philip White said that he was disappointed to have found such a level of disregard of health and safety standards, even though the inspection initiative had been announced.
